چکیده

Current Mars rovers travel a few kilometers per year. Future rovers will need to travel a couple orders of magnitude faster than that in order to move from safe landing zones to areas of scientific interest – which may be many 10s of kilometers away from a suitable landing location. This paper describes a recent field test of the SR-II rover. SR-II is a 22kg solar powered autonomous rover, which during a week long traverse through rough Mars-like terrain was able to cover almost a kilometer per day.

Perceptual learning of contrast discrimination under roving: the role of semantic sequence in stimulus tagging.

Perceptual learning may occur when multiple contrasts are practiced in a fixed, but not in a roving (random), temporal sequence. However, learning may escape roving disruption when each contrast is assigned a letter tag (i.e., A, B, C, D). Because these letter tags carry not only stimulus identity information, but also semantic sequence information, here we investigated whether the semantic seq...

The effect of stimulus context on the buildup to stream segregation

Stream segregation is the process by which the auditory system disentangles the mixture of sound inputs into discrete sources that cohere across time. The length of time required for this to occur is termed the "buildup" period. In the current study, we used the buildup period as an index of how quickly sounds are segregated into constituent parts. Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that st...

Deleterious effects of roving on learned tasks

In typical perceptual learning experiments, one stimulus type (e.g., a bisection stimulus offset either to the left or right) is presented per trial. In roving, two different stimulus types (e.g., a 30' and a 20' wide bisection stimulus) are randomly interleaved from trial to trial. Roving can impair both perceptual learning and task sensitivity. Here, we investigate the relationship between th...

Stimulus Roving and Flankers Affect Perceptual Learning of Contrast Discrimination in Macaca mulatta

'Stimulus roving' refers to a paradigm in which the properties of the stimuli to be discriminated vary from trial to trial, rather than being kept constant throughout a block of trials. Rhesus monkeys have previously been shown to improve their contrast discrimination performance on a non-roving task, in which they had to report the contrast of a test stimulus relative to that of a fixed-contra...
